First woodworking project

Circular Saw and Drill Starter Kit

You do not need a workshop to start. You need a way to cut a board square and a way to drive a screw without splitting it. A circular saw and a drill cover that. Everything else can wait until a project demands it.

Buy these first

A circular saw with a sharp blade. A drill or driver and a small bit set, including a countersink if you can find one cheap. A tape measure. A speed square. Two clamps. Safety glasses. Ear protection for the saw. That list builds a shelf, a simple bench, and a planter.

How the two tools split the job

The saw cuts length. Use a straight edge clamped to the board so the shoe has a guide. Freehand cuts wander. The drill makes pilot holes and drives screws. Pilots matter in pine near the end of a board. Skip them and the wood splits, and the joint is already failed.

Unplug or remove the battery before you change a blade or a bit. That is the rule that prevents the boring injuries.

What to skip for now

A table saw, a miter saw, a router, a nail gun, a planer. Each solves a problem you do not have on project one. A table saw is also the tool most likely to hurt a new user. A guided circular saw is slower and good enough for straight cuts on a shelf or a 2x4 frame.

Used is fine

A used drill that runs is as good as a new one. Check that the saw starts, the blade guard moves, and the cord is not cracked. Buy bits and blades new. A dull blade burns wood and kicks.

A fair first afternoon with the kit

Set the saw depth so the blade clears the board by about a quarter inch. Deeper than that and you are cutting the bench. Support the offcut so it does not pinch the blade and kick. Two scraps under the board are enough.

On the drill, start with a pilot smaller than the screw shank. Drive the screw until the head is flush, not buried so far the wood crushes. A stripped hole in pine is a wasted joint. Back the screw out, move a quarter inch, and pilot again.

Keep the cord or the battery out of the cut line. That sounds obvious until the saw is running. Glasses stay on for the whole cut, not just the first inch.

Who this is not for

Skip this list if you already own a saw and a drill. Skip it if you want cabinet work this month — that wants different tools and more practice. This kit is for the first straight project.

When the plan library belongs

Ted's Woodworking is a paid downloadable plan library, about sixty-seven dollars, sold through ClickBank. It does not include the saw. It is cut lists and drawings if you would rather follow a plan than invent one.

FAQ

Is a hand saw enough?

Yes for one shelf. A circular saw is faster once you have a guide. Either is honest.

What do you get with Ted's Woodworking?

A digital plan library — not tools.
